JLG Toucan 10E Supports Maintenance & Manufacturing Operations at Raynesway
The Challenge
Skyreach Access Solutions has supplied Rolls-Royce Submarines Limited (RRSL) with a new JLG Toucan 10E mast boom lift for use across its nuclear-licensed site at Raynesway, Derby.
Rolls-Royce Submarines is responsible for delivering the Nuclear Steam Raising Plants (NSRP), as well as elements of the secondary propulsion systems, to the UK Ministry of Defence. The business also manages these assets throughout their lifecycle, supporting existing Trafalgar, Vanguard and Astute-class submarines in service.
With an extensive manufacturing and engineering operation at Raynesway, RRSL requires reliable and versatile access equipment to support a wide range of maintenance, facilities and manufacturing activities.
The latest Toucan 10E provides a compact, highly manoeuvrable access solution for working at height within the site’s buildings and operational areas.
The Solution
Following discussions with the RRSL team, Skyreach supplied a JLG Toucan 10E to provide safe and efficient access for general maintenance and manufacturing applications across the Raynesway site.
The Toucan’s compact dimensions, electric drive and precise manoeuvrability make it particularly well suited to working within busy industrial environments, where space can be restricted and access around machinery, plant and infrastructure is essential.
This latest machine is the third JLG Toucan mast boom lift supplied by Skyreach to Rolls-Royce Submarines, joining an existing Toucan 10E and larger Toucan 12E Plus.
Together, the three machines are utilised by the CDM Operations, Facilities and Core Manufacturing teams, supporting a variety of day-to-day maintenance and manufacturing requirements across the extensive Raynesway operation.
A Growing Site & A Long-Term Requirement
The investment comes at an important time for Rolls-Royce Submarines.
In 2023, it was confirmed that Rolls-Royce Submarines would provide the nuclear reactor plants that will power the UK’s new attack submarines as part of the AUKUS partnership between Australia, the UK and the US.
Significant investment is now taking place at Raynesway, with new manufacturing and office buildings being developed to support this future work. Construction is underway to significantly expand the site, with the programme expected to create more than 1,000 new jobs.
With thousands of employees based at the Derby operation, ensuring teams have access to appropriate, reliable and properly supported work-at-height equipment is an important part of maintaining safe and efficient operations.
More Than Equipment Supply
Skyreach’s relationship with Rolls-Royce Submarines extends back many years.
The first major equipment supply dates back to 2013, when Skyreach supplied RRSL with a JLG M600JP multi-power boom lift.
Since then, Skyreach has continued to support the business with equipment supply, operator training and ongoing service and examination support.
This long-term approach means RRSL has access to not only the right equipment, but also the technical expertise and after-sales support required throughout the equipment’s working life.

The addition of the latest JLG Toucan 10E gives Rolls-Royce Submarines another versatile, compact and reliable access solution for its teams working across the Raynesway site.
More importantly, it further strengthens a relationship that has developed over more than a decade — from the original supply of a JLG M600JP in 2013 through to the supply and ongoing support of multiple Toucan mast boom lifts today.
